Lead CNC Machinist - Job Description

We are hiring a Lead CNC Machinist.

Scope and Skillset:

  • Safely Set up, program and operate machines that include Manual and CNC Lathes, Manual & CNC Mills, 5-Axis machines.
  • Lead the Machining Department:
    • Follow schedules, understand priorities
    • Know and help develop run rates and assure we are maintaining rates to meet schedules and customer demand and expectations.
    • Lead by example
  • Measure work piece dimensions and determine accuracy of machine operation -perform first piece, in-process, and last piece inspections on parts using inspection tools and gages (calipers, micrometers, height gages, Vernier & digital).
  • Knowledge of programming.
  • Perform machine maintenance such as oiling machines and dies and daily cleaning, as well as preventative maintenance.
  • Work with different metals such as Aluminum, Stainless Steel, Steel, Brass, Copper, Titanium
  • Set up and adjust machine controls to produce parts to customer specifications, utilizing knowledge of machine operation, programming.
  • Read blueprints, work orders and job folders to understand work piece specifications, tooling and material requirements.
  • Observe machine operations to detect any problems; make any necessary adjustments to correct problems.
  • Understand geometric dimensioning and tolerancing.

Duties and Areas of Responsibility:

  • Operate machines through cycles, to ensure specified timing.
  • Make in-process adjustments as needed to maintain quality and production standards.
  • Understand work piece specifications, tooling and material requirements and sequence of production operations.
  • Observe machine operations to detect any problems as well as make any necessary adjustments to rectify issues.
  • Understand geometric dimensioning and tolerancing.
  • Follow the Department Work Schedule throughout the day. Review schedule and plan for the days and the week ahead.
  • Maintain and track your time by logging in and out of jobs in the ERP System, and verify accuracy and timeliness of the department logins.
  • Complete all documentation necessary to run production, this includes: Inspection sheets, Job Traveler, and any tags. Follow all Work Instructions.
  • Complete all required inspections on work pieces to ensure quality standards and customer specifications are met, these include: First piece inspection, In-Process Inspections and Last Piece Inspections using gauges, calipers and micrometers.
    • Assure department compliance in this area.
  • Operate machines through cycles, to ensure specified timing.
    • Follow and support all applicable ISO9001 & AS9100 standards and procedures.
  1. Other Duties as Assigned and not limited to:
  • Set up and operate deburring and related tools that remove excess material of burrs from surfaces, sharp edges or corners, buff or polish metal pieces as required.
  • Maintain and sharpen cutting tools.
  • Report any problems with machines, production operations, machining, tooling or quality to the Director of Operations
  • Other assignments on an as needed basis per management.

Experience and Knowledge:

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent.
  • 2-3 years minimum of experience on a manual and CNC Lathe, and/or manual & CNC Mills.
  • Minimum 3 years working in manufacturing environment.
  • Basic Math and Measurement skills to perform calculations for product specifications.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Ability to read basic blueprints.
